No Respect

Me and Mark Schlabach are going to get in a fight. And I'm going to whoop his ass.

We'll see who's in the Top 25 at the END of the season. I'll be expecting a personal apology from Mark.

Check this out.

A Little Dust on the Bottle

Today commenced the packing frenzy. Yes, I packed my first boxes today. Now, I am still in denial that I am leaving Nashville, but most of us live in denial every day of our lives.

On to my point, I was going through all of my nursing school books and textbooks I had kept through college and beneath a stack that seemed endless, I found two of my college yearbooks. Only two years removed from college, it feels so much longer. As I sat down on my bed to flip through the pages to desperately remember my college days, I dusted off the cover to this young, but old yearbook. Of course, as most of you can remember, the first thing in a yearbook are those awful, poorly photographed individual portraits. Well, they don't look any better as they age either. California could probably hear me laughing once I flipped to the "B" section of the alphabetically ordered pictures.

As I hurriedly turned the pages, familiar faces began to appear and familiar activities came to the forefront of my memory. Ah, college. When I first arrived on campus as a student-athlete unpacking in my inhumanely small dorm room, the words "these are the best days of your life" kept running through my head. Well, that statement wasn't far from the truth.

All of the friends, concerts, late nights, tipsy parties, and 8:00 AM classes were rushing back into my mind. My friends, well, my friends are the greatest a person could ask for. Just last week, we had our annual reunion where statements such as "remember when..." and "I remember that!" kept being said. Our annual reunions are so refreshing. They keep me so humble and they bring me back to my core where I am reminded of who I am and what is really important. Yea, college is everything it's cracked up to be.

As for our next reunion....well, I hear that there is this wedding in Alabama next July....;)

I guess it's back to the packing.

Happy Monday.

If I was in charge...

On my 45 minute drive from the clinic today, I could barely keep myself awake. Due to the high number of patients we ended up seeing this morning, I got a 5 minute lunch. Granted, there are people out there who don't get a lunch at all (and that is completely and utterly wrong), but 5 minutes for lunch is inexcusable. I didn't even have time to unwind my brain and enjoy a little bit of fresh air. So, here's my proposal:

As much as I hate the French, their philosophy on lunch breaks is right on target. The French take no less than 2 hours for lunch. 2 hours!!! That's enough time to take a nap, workout, and eat! I feel like we, Americans, have completely missed the boat on this one. We are all getting fatter, lazier, and dead-er. We are dying younger, dying more painfully, and dying with regrets. Of course, short lunch breaks is not the culprit for our declining health, but the fact that we are so exhausted once we do get home, plays a huge role. Our motivation to go take a run or do an extra set of sit-ups or walk around the block is non-existent due to the amount of work we do during the day. Some of our jobs are not only mentally exhausting, but also physically exhausting.

So, what about a 2 hour lunch break? All offices shut down, the stock market shuts down for 2 hours while all stock brokers go change their suits because they're drenched in sweat, and hospital employees will rotate more often during lunch breaks. I know, this is the epitome of wishful thinking, but I'm sure a lot more of us would be bearable at the end of the day, people would be so much happier with their lives/jobs/health, and hospitals/clinics wouldn't be overflowing with overweight 47 year-olds battling heart failure.

Yea, if I was in charge.....

I'll keep dreaming.

Ello, Goodbye! Ello, Goodbye!

In three days, David Beckham will make his debut as a member of the L.A. Galaxy soccer team. Now, I am personally not an avid soccer fan; but, all this money they're spending on this David Beckham character is enough to get me interested.

With the MLS floundering as it is, this is a last attempt to save the league. Who am I kidding? I pretty much could care less about soccer just as long as i get to watch Landon Donovan, Michael Owen, and David Beckham prance all over the field during the Olympics and World Cup. And, of course, if their shirts just happen to fall off while they're running, I wouldn't mind.

In all seriousness, I do hope that the MLS does find its way into American hearts, as hard as that might be since all we seem to care about here in the great country of the U.S. of A. is college football and Nascar. Well, here is my argument and the argument of the L.A. Galaxy organization:

...um, wow.

So, Saturday, if you're not at the grocery store or watching the Yankees fight their way back into the pennant race, then flip on over to the Galaxy game and watch Mr. Beckham run around with his little English accent and try to revive the MLS single-handedly.

Oh yes, i love you MD. muah.

toodles.

The List

With my departure from Nashville quickly approaching, there are a number of things I want/need to do before I leave for Houston (i.e. eat). There are a number of restaurants in Nashville I have grown to love and what has embodied this great city. Following a walk yesterday with a good friend, we sat down and made a list of all the places I wanted to go. This is what we came up with:
  1. Bluebird Cafe
  2. Calypso Cafe
  3. Sub Stop
  4. Loveless Cafe
  5. MacDougal's
  6. Bosco's
  7. Sam's
  8. Sunset Grille
  9. Rotier's
  10. The Stage
  11. Big Bang
  12. Tin Roof
  13. Dan McGuinness
  14. Hatch Show Print
  15. Baja Burrito
  16. Demos'
As one of my nursing school buddies said, "I gained 10 pounds just by reading the list."

Exactly.

With three weeks left in Nashville, I'm already starting to miss it. Nonetheless, I have something to keep me busy and attempt soak up as much of Nashville as I can.

Of course, I am moving to Houston, which is known for its plethora of restaurants, unbelievable food, and Rice University's Compliance Coordinator; so, the move will be relatively painless.....I hope. But, since Nashville has become my "home, " I need to pay my respects to all of those places that have made this city so important to me.

With only two assignments left for Vanderbilt, I move on to packing up my townhouse and setting up important meetings for wedding planning, which should do more than enough to keep me busy.

And don't worry Nashville, I will be back.

Goodbye Gee

After vehemently denying reports of Chancellor Gee leaving Vanderbilt University for The Ohio State University, the Vanderbilt student body received an email from Chancellor Gee this afternoon around 1:30 PM announcing his resignation as Chancellor of Vanderbilt. He is slated to assume Presidential responsibilities at The Ohio State University August 1st.

The two previous posts I have written about Dr. Gee can be found here and here.

With the Chancellor leaving, a huge void is left in Nashville. There were many activities, events, and ceremonies where Dr. Gee was the stronghold. You could find him on Fraternity Row at 2:00AM on Friday and Saturday nights partying with all the students. He put together one of the most magical graduation ceremonies I have ever attended. He always addressed all of the nursing students prior to each academic career with words of encouragement and praise for the profession we had chosen. And, if there was a Vanderbilt sport event, he was there....bowtie and all.

The minute students, alumni, and faculty read the email this afternoon, a gasp could be heard across Nashville. A copy of the email and news releases regarding his resignation can be read here.

I began to feel a mixture of emotions when I read the email: anger, bitterness, sadness, etc. I guess no one would fully understand if you never met him and the impact he had on people's lives. He reminds me of the former President and current Chancellor of Birmingham-Southern, my alma mater, Dr. Neal Berte. Dr. Berte would know everyone's name the minute they stepped on campus as freshmen. He would always ask me how softball season was going and how I felt about the upcoming season. Certain people just have that charisma about them that cannot be taught.

Prior to his Chancellor post at Vanderbilt, Dr. Gee was President at Brown University, Ohio State, University of Colorado, and West Virginia University. The tremendous changes he has made at Vanderbilt are unprecedented. Admission applications increased from 8,000 to 13,000 per year during his tenure, increasing the University's endowment to nearly $3 billion dollars, leading the country in rate of growth in academic research, and restructuring Vanderbilt's athletic department leading to success never seen before in school history.

He will be missed once he returns to Ohio State, but the next Chancellor, I'm sure, will be of the same caliber and reputation as Dr. Gee.

Go 'Dores.

Work? Nah.

After a long day at the clinic dealing with a patient who wouldn't stop talking about his new found revelation of illegally making whiskey in Tennessee, I came home to a massive amount of work to complete. With only three weeks left in my Graduate School career, there is more work to be done now than there has ever been. Trying to keep my sanity at the clinic and at home, I turn to my pictures. I thought I would share what I had been up to this past week when I was back home in 'Bama.

Of course, the week started off with our Independence Day. My family tends to go a little overboard, which really isn't anything new for us, but renting a pavilion and arriving at 6:00AM is a little excessive. This is a "tradition" my family feels the need to continue every year; well, I respectfully disagree. What's new. Showing up at 10AM, I felt the only way to start off the day was a lovely picture with the maternal figure.

And, I would like to introduce the world wide web to our family mascot:

No, not my brother, the dog is the mascot. "Biscuit" has been in the family for about 10 years now and hasn't missed a 4th of July since he came into the family. After we all engorged ourselves on barbecue chicken, ribs, corn on the cob, salad, and watermelon, we all headed back home to take the longest afternoon nap in history.

This past weekend, I went to a wedding with Deano and his family to watch one of his long time high school buddies tie the knot. Now, with respect to the bride and groom, I had the best looking date, and groomsman, in the room.

As you could guess, I am now back in Nashville going to the clinic everyday so that I can finish up my hours. August 5 is quickly approaching and there are papers to be written and clinical hours to be completed.

Time to go be a good student.

Have a great night.

28 Days

Yup. That's right. Only 28 more days until I can call myself Vanderbilt Alumni. It's a little surreal to be honest. I can't quite grasp the entire situation. Having spent so much time over the past 2 years working to this one point and realizing that it is finally here is truly amazing. Only a handful of assignments left to complete and about 100 clinical hours left to get is all that is standing between me and my Masters Degree.

This past week, I was in Bama with the family and the Fiancee attending wedding festivities and just having a good 'ole time. Of course, being around a wedding only made me think of my own wedding, which is set and the countdown has begun. Throughout the entire night, ideas, dislikes, loves, and visions were flashing through my head and how I want to make my wedding one of "those weddings" that people never forget. Maybe I'm just a sucker for a good party, but entertaining myself and those that I love is something that I will never overlook or get tired of doing.

During the week, talk of our wedding kept being discussed and I could feel myself get excited each time someone asked me about it...."Did you set a date?" "Where are you going to have it?" "Can I please be invited?"

The bottom line is that I'm getting married to my best friend and the love of my life and I'm not real sure if life could get much better than that. This is just another excuse for us to throw a party. There are moments when I think a lot of brides forget that a marriage is going to take place because they get so caught up in planning a wedding. So, advice that I keep giving myself everyday I plan this wedding is to remember that the marriage is the reason we are bringing everyone together.

Don't forget to visit our webpage and sign our guestbook.

So, write it down...July 26, 2008 is a day that is going to make all of your dreams come true.
