On my 45 minute drive from the clinic today, I could barely keep myself awake. Due to the high number of patients we ended up seeing this morning, I got a 5 minute lunch. Granted, there are people out there who don't get a lunch at all (and that is completely and utterly wrong), but 5 minutes for lunch is inexcusable. I didn't even have time to unwind my brain and enjoy a little bit of fresh air. So, here's my proposal:
As much as I hate the French, their philosophy on lunch breaks is right on target. The French take no less than 2 hours for lunch. 2 hours!!! That's enough time to take a nap, workout, and eat! I feel like we, Americans, have completely missed the boat on this one. We are all getting fatter, lazier, and dead-er. We are dying younger, dying more painfully, and dying with regrets. Of course, short lunch breaks is not the culprit for our declining health, but the fact that we are so exhausted once we do get home, plays a huge role. Our motivation to go take a run or do an extra set of sit-ups or walk around the block is non-existent due to the amount of work we do during the day. Some of our jobs are not only mentally exhausting, but also physically exhausting.
So, what about a 2 hour lunch break? All offices shut down, the stock market shuts down for 2 hours while all stock brokers go change their suits because they're drenched in sweat, and hospital employees will rotate more often during lunch breaks. I know, this is the epitome of wishful thinking, but I'm sure a lot more of us would be bearable at the end of the day, people would be so much happier with their lives/jobs/health, and hospitals/clinics wouldn't be overflowing with overweight 47 year-olds battling heart failure.
Yea, if I was in charge.....
I'll keep dreaming.
